This video presents addresses and a panel presentation that focus on victim and crime prevention services for the elderly, as well as ways in which the elderly can become involved in community crime prevention efforts.
Abstract
The video opens with an address from the director of the Federal Office of Victims of Crime, in which she describes some of the programs for the elderly sponsored by her office. The programs described are designed to prevent and mitigate the criminal victimization of the elderly. A major program supported by the Office of Victims of Crime (OVC) is the TRIAD program, in which a local police agency, sheriff's office, and seniors organization cooperate to identify the public safety needs of seniors and devise and deliver programs to meet those needs. Following the address by the OVC director, the Texas Attorney General describes the efforts of his office to service the public safety needs of seniors. A particular focus of his office is telemarketing fraud that targets seniors. The Texas Attorney General's Office has a unit of five attorneys that deals only with crimes against the elderly. The panel, which consists of persons involved in various efforts to counter crimes against the elderly, describes programs designed to inform seniors about various frauds that target seniors as well as programs that involve seniors as volunteers in community crime prevention and other public safety activities. A question-and-answer session, involving both audience participants and telephone calls, is included on the video.
