This report details the number of crimes reported to police between January and December 1998 for a selected range of offense categories and places South Australian (SA) crime trends within the Australian context.
Abstract
Offenses covered by the report include only those for which nationally comparable definitions have been developed. These are: total murder and attempted murder; total manslaughter and driving causing death; assault; sexual assault; kidnapping/abduction; total robbery; blackmail/extortion; total unlawful entry with intent; motor vehicle theft; and other theft. There were 25 murders recorded in 1998, for a rate of 1.68 per 100,000 population, slightly above the national average. South Australia's rate of "driving causing death" was also somewhat higher than the national average, but the SA rates for attempted murder, manslaughter, kidnapping/abduction and blackmail/extortion were below the national averages. Data for the remaining offenses are discussed in terms of trends and percentage shifts. Tables, figures
