Pedophilia in Australia is examined with respect to its definition, incidence, perpetrators, effects on victims, sex offender treatment programs, prevention, and policy proposals.
Abstract
The analysis concludes that pedophilia is part of a complex web of deviant sexual behavior that is specifically directed toward child sexual abuse. This and other forms of child abuse can result in later social problems such as youth homelessness, juvenile prostitution, juvenile delinquency, mental health problems, drug abuse, and the inability to form relationships. The causes of pedophilia include society's attitudes toward children, sex, and violence, as well as the effects of childhood experiences. Appropriate sentencing and treatment programs are a necessary part of the criminal justice response to sex offenders. However, programs to prevent all types of child abuse need to be coordinated at a national level and then implemented at State and local government levels to ensure integrated method of practice and minimum standards. This approach would also help elevate the status of children and educate the public about the unacceptability of child sexual abuse. In addition, institutions need their own systems of oversight and accountability to prevent the abuse of children in their care. 48 references
