The guidelines in this article are excerpts from a brochure prepared as a handout for faculty and students at the Harrisburg Area Community College during the security briefing they receive prior to departure on an overseas trip. The guidelines begin with travel preparations, and include suggestions regarding travel itinerary, passport, visas and other documents. Suggested actions when checking into a transportation hub are included to diminish the traveler’s risk of becoming a victim of a terrorist attack. The article includes numerous suggestions in the category of “street smarts,” to ensure the traveler’s personal security when moving about a foreign city. The article also contains advice on what to do if arrested in a foreign country.
