In 1998, the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association sent a survey questionnaire to 776 of its 843 member and satellite programs to obtain information on programs targeting the interests of abused and neglected children in court.
Abstract
Completed surveys were returned by 417 programs representing a 66 percent response rate. Programs reported a median of 35 volunteers, volunteers contributed an overall annual median of 103 hours per year, and programs served a median of 131 children each. The median number of paid staff was two per program; among programs more than 2 years old, the average director's salary was $32,377, and the average volunteer coordinator's salary was $24,438. The median revenue reported by programs was $75,000, the median cost per child was $562, and the median cost per volunteer was $1,947. CASA program trends between 1995 and 1998 are examined with respect to number of programs, rural versus urban programs, revenue changes, number of children served, number of volunteers and volunteer hours, funding sources, staff diversity, staff turnover, volunteer retention, geographic area served, program costs, and volunteer characteristics. A list of CASA programs by state is appended. 2 tables and 61 figures
