This workbook provides exercises written at a fourth-grade level to enable imprisoned men with the opportunity to deal with their psychological issues related to the pain associated with loss.
Abstract
The workbook covers ten major areas of grief and loss, including losses of material goods, a job, the physical self, control, personal freedom, relationships, childhood, spirituality, loved ones who have died, and dreams and goals. The introduction notes that the expression of emotional pain is generally different for men than for women, that men often are denied the opportunity to express their pain openly, and that feelings of rage, confusion and other emotions result in acting-out behaviors. The workbook is intended to give readers the choice of working through their pain to healing. Readers are advised to give themselves as much time as the need in each section, to discuss issues that arise with someone they trust, and to use the extra space on each page to write notes to themselves. Individual chapters focus on issues of grief and loss, the modern view of death and loss, normal life and the cycle of grief, pain avoidance and drug abuse, grief and incarceration, denial and protest, grief proper and acceptance, and reinvestment and resolution.
