A national review of the extent and diversity of programs for perpetrators of domestic violence began with an examination of Australian and overseas literature pertaining to the subject. This was followed by a comprehensive mapping exercise of perpetrator programs across Australian jurisdictions, which formed the basis of a comprehensive computerized database that can be updated at regular intervals. These two activities provided the basis for: (1) a more in-depth survey and analysis of a sample of the programs identified in the mapping exercise and (2) an exploration of the extent to which programs address the needs of specific communities and people with special needs (those whose first language is not English, Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders and Australian South Sea Islanders, those who live in remote and rural locations, and people who are disabled). The project identified 39 organizations providing 55 designated perpetrator programs. It focused on men as perpetrators because research consistently demonstrates that female partners or ex-partners are at far greater risk of spousal violence than males. References
