Detailed statistics are tabulated on Part I offenses (criminal homicide, forcible rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson) and on Part II offenses (simple or minor assault, forgery and counterfeiting, fraud, embezzlement, buying and receiving stolen property, vandalism, weapons carrying and possession, prostitution and commercialized vice, sex offenses, drug abuse violations, gambling, offenses against the family and children, driving under the influence, liquor law violations, drunkenness, disorderly conduct, vagrancy, curfew and loitering law violations, and juvenile runaways. The statistics indicate that 960,132 crimes of all types were reported to the UCR Program in 1998 by Pennsylvania law enforcement agencies, representing a rate of 7,987.8 crimes per 100,000 population and an increase of 5.1 percent over the 913,694 crimes reported in 1997. In 1998, 369,054 Part I index crimes were reported and confirmed by Pennsylvania police after investigation. In addition, 591,047 Part II offenses were reported, representing a rate of 4,917.2 per 100,000 population. Also in 1998, 48.8 percent of all offenses were cleared, 25.3 percent of Part I index offenses and 63.4 percent of Part II offenses. The number of arrests in 1998 totaled 474,293, a 7.2-percent increase over 1997. Nearly 80 percent of arrestees were male, and 54.9 percent were under 25 years of age.
