Abstract
The Thai Department of Corrections, Ministry of Interior, is responsible for rehabilitating prisoners through institutional and non-institutional treatment. Institutional treatment is carried out in prisons and other correctional institutions and non-institutional treatment through parole, sentence remission, pardon, and penal settlement. The Department has implemented several measures for rehabilitating prisoners, teaching them life skills, and preparing them for reintegration into society. The process begins with classification of prisoners when they are admitted to prison. Every prisoner is required to engage in useful work, which provides basic skills in trades which will assist them in earning a living after release. Prisons and other correctional institutions also provide general education courses. Higher education is available through correspondence courses with the Open University. The prisons provide instruction in Buddhism and instructors in other religions are invited to conduct courses as well. The prisons work toward preventing drug use by prisoners and offer a three-stage treatment program (withdrawal, psychological and physical recovery, and rehabilitation). Prisoners are entitled to regular visits and contact visits, medical care, and welfare services such as sports and recreation and music. In addition to these in-prison programs to prepare offenders for release, the Probation Bureau observes and assists prisoners discharged to probation and to halfway houses. Tables
