This is an officer’s field guide to missing and abducted child case investigations.
Abstract
This Investigative Checklist is intended to provide law enforcement officers and agencies with a generic guide for investigating missing child cases. Law enforcement administrators should ensure that their agencies have established effective policies and procedures for handling missing/abducted child investigations. The checklist is not intended to be followed step-by-step by officers during each missing child investigation. It is meant to provide a framework of actions, considerations, and activities to assist in performing competent, productive, and successful investigations. The guide presents suggestions in the following areas of responsibility: Administrative, First Responder, Investigative Officer/Detective, and Supervisory. A Nonfamily Abduction Investigative Checklist includes initial investigation, prolonged investigation, and recovery/case closure. Family Abduction Investigative Checklist includes initial investigation, prolonged investigation, international abductions, and recovery/case closure. Runaway Investigative Checklist includes initial investigation, prolonged investigation, and recovery/case closure.
