Annotation: This July/August 2002 newsletter of the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) contains information on youth courts, a gang symposium, new publications, a youth summit, a funding update, and online conferencing.
Abstract: The opening topic is the designation by OJJDP and the National Youth Court Center of September 2002 as the first National Youth Court Month. The theme is "Youth Court: Positive Peer Pressure, Teens Helping Teens." This theme recognizes that by involving the community and family members of offenders and victims, youth courts influence the lives of juveniles in a unique and positive way. In the next section of the newsletter, the third OJJDP National Youth Gang Symposium, held June 11-13, 2002, in Orlando, Florida, is reviewed. The symposium offered a variety of activities and information that focused on innovative and viable gang-related programs and strategies. The newsletter also describes the first National Youth Summit, which was held June 26-28, 2002, in Washington, DC. The summit brought together a diverse audience of youth and adults to promote positive youth development, a policy perspective that emphasizes opportunities and services that help youth succeed. The section entitled "Funding Update" highlights OJJDP's current and upcoming solicitations, recent grant awards, and other funding-related developments. In July, OJJDP announced funding opportunities for fiscal year 2002 under the following programs: Multisystem Decisionmaking Training and Technical Assistance Project and the National Training and Technical Assistance Program for Tribal Youth Program Grantees, American Indian Tribes, and Alaska Native Communities. The newsletter concludes with a brief description of the Antidrug Coalition's uses of online conferencing.
