This report on the 12th session (May 13-22, 2003) of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice pertains to matters for action by the Economic and Social Council as well as a description of deliberations and actions taken by the Commission on various issues.
Abstract
One of the matters for action by the Economic and Social Council or brought to is attention are draft resolutions to be recommended by the Council for adoption by the United Nations General Assembly. These pertain to the strengthening of international cooperation in preventing and combating trafficking in persons and protecting victims of such trafficking, international cooperation in the fight against transnational organized crime, and strengthening international cooperation and technical assistance in promoting the implementation of the universal conventions and protocols related to terrorism. Draft resolutions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council pertain to the prevention of urban crime; illicit trafficking in protected species of wild flora and fauna; international cooperation in the prevention, combating, and elimination of kidnapping and in providing assistance to victims; the prevention of crimes that infringe on the cultural heritage of peoples in the form of moveable property; and United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice. The draft decisions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council are the report of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice on its 12th session and provisional agenda and documentation for its 13th session, as well as appointment of members of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Interregional Crime and justice Research Institute. Deliberations and actions of the Commission are described for the following issues: thematic discussion on trafficking in human beings, particularly women and children; the work of the Centre for International Crime Prevention; international cooperation in combating transnational crime; the strengthening of international cooperation and technical assistance in preventing and combating terrorism; the use and application of United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice; and issues related to the management and procedures of the Commission.
