Abstract
Advocacy programs exist at the local and regional level to provide shelter and assistance to battered women. These shelters can be found in urban as well as in rural areas close to tribal/reservation communities. Native advocates who work in these shelters believe that at times non-Native advocates that work in these facilities are not responsive to the needs of Native women who have been battered. This manual is the result of a survey of State coalitions to assess their ability to recognize the alienation of Native women advocates and to acknowledge if anything had been done to address the problem. The manual is divided into 14 sections that cover a brief history of Native Women, a brief history of rape crisis and battered woman movements; general principles of advocacy; rape crisis and advocacy for Native Women survivors; shelter and advocacy for battered Native Women; advocating for Native Women in the community; jurisdictional issues and Native Women; and steps for change.
