RESULTS OF THE HOCKING TECHNICAL COLLEGE INCARCERATION PROGRAM IN WHICH 20 POLICE SCIENCE AND CORRECTIONS STUDENTS, MALE AND FEMALE, PLAYED THE ROLES OF ARRESTING OFFICER, JAILER, AND JAIL INMATE DURING A 24-HOUR PERIOD.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM TOOK PLACE IN THREE PHASES - ARREST AND BOOKING, INCARCERATION, AND CRITIQUE. THE TECHNIQUE OF ROLE PLAYING WAS FOUND TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN MAKING ALL PARTICIPANTS MORE AWARE OF AND EMPATHETIC TO THE IDENTITIES AND PROBLEMS OF POLICE AND CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL AS WELL AS THOSE OF INMATES. PARTICIPANTS' RESPONSES TO TRUE-FALSE AND SENTENCE COMPLETION QUESTIONNAIRES ARE INCLUDED.
