Annotation: This paper profiles the mission and achievements of the OJJDP (Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention) Judicial and Probation Outreach Project (JPOP) from November 2007 to October 2011, with attention to its achievements in providing technical support to the judicial community in countering underage drinking.
Abstract: Through the combined efforts of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation and the American Probation and Parole Association under the supervision of OJJDP, the JPOP has provided support and education to judges, judicial educators, law clerks, state’s attorneys, and probation officers about the complexities of underage drinking and its relationship to other risk behaviors and youth-community safety. The project has collected, synthesized, and disseminated information to judicial personnel through a variety of communication channels. This effort has guided an increasing number of judges in providing an informed response to the problem of underage drinking. Among JPOP’s accomplishments are the dissemination of emerging knowledge on underage drinking through the quarterly Judicial eNews, the posting of articles and case studies on www. EDETC. org, and the development of a speaker’s bureau of judges who educate their peers on adjudication, policy, law, and implications regarding underage drinking. For release in 2011, JPOP is developing a comprehensive compendium of information to guide judges on issues related to dealing with alcohol use by underage drinkers.
