Proceedings and recommendations are presented from the First National SANE (sexual assault nurse examiner) Coordinator Symposium, whose purpose was to help regional (tribal, state, military branch, and territory) efforts in taking the next step toward stronger coordination, program development, and sustainability through face-to-face networking, information sharing, strategizing, and the identification of technical assistance and research priorities.
Abstract
The report notes that SANE and sexual assault forensic examiner (SAFE) programs have emerged across the country to address the unique nad often complex medical and legal needs of sexual assault victims. The Symposium provided an opportunity for coordinators of these programs to discuss critical issues in their communities, to learn about best and promising approaches and practices being used in other programs, and to build connections to peers. Emerging issues, promising practices, and technical assistance and support needs of SANE programs and their coordinators are outlined in this report. These topics were addressed in the areas of SANE training and competency, leadership development and policy issues, and program sustainability. Recommendations address priority technical assistance needs. 4 references and a listing of technical assistance resources
