THIS PAPER PRESENTS A NARRATIVE AND STATISTICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL VIOLENCE AND VANDALISM PROBLEM, OUTLINES SOCIETAL AND EDUCATIONAL ROOTS OF THE PROBLEM, AND PROVIDES DATA ON MEASURES TO STEM SCHOOL VIOLENCE.
Abstract
IN APRIL OF 1975, THE SENATE JUDICIARY SUBCOMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE JUVENILE DELINQUENCY RELEASED THE RESULTS OF ITS 18-MONTH STUDY ON SCHOOL VIOLENCE AND VANDALISM. THIS PAPER, WHICH INCORPORATES MANY OF THE FINDINGS OF THAT STUDY, IS INTENDED TO INFORM COMMUNITY EDUCATORS OF THE SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM AND TO OFFER INFORMATION ON THE CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE. IN THE FIRST PART OF THIS STUDY IS A BRIEF REPORT CONCERNING THE STATISTICAL INFORMATION AVAILABLE FROM NUMEROUS STUDIES. THIS INFORMATION IS PROVIDED TO DEMONSTRATE THE SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM, AS WELL AS TO GIVE THE COMMUNITY EDUCATOR A DIGEST OF THE RESEARCH THAT HAS BEEN GENERATED. EXPERT OPINIONS AND EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ON THE CAUSES OF VIOLENCE AND VANDALISM ARE THEN PROVIDED. THE THIRD PART OF THE STUDY DISCUSSES SOLUTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN SUGGESTED AND TRIED WITH A DEGREE OF SUCCESS. THE COMMUNITY EDUCATOR'S ROLE IN THE SEARCH FOR SOLUTIONS IS ALSO DISCUSSED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR ACTION RESEARCH WHICH COMMUNITY EDUCATION DIRECTORS CAN ACCOMPLISH. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...DMC
