THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE EXTENT TO WHICH POLICE VOLUNTEERS ARE USED IN VARIOUS LOCALITIES.
Abstract
THERE ARE SOME 350,000 MEN AND WOMEN WHO HELP CATCH CRIMINALS, SUPERVISE PARADES, AND ASSIST LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN OTHER WAYS. MOST OF THEM GO WITHOUT PAY. THIS ARTICLE EXPLAINS THE LENGTH OF TRAINING VARIOUS VOLUNTEERS MUST TAKE, WHETHER THEY ARE ARMED, AND OTHER DUTIES THEY PERFORM. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VOLUNTEERS IS EXAMINED, AS WELL AS THE TYPE OF PRAISE AND CRITICISM THEY HAVE RECEIVED. THE NEED FOR STANDARDS FOR THE FUTURE ARE DISCUSSED....BDS
