Abstract
THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN CRIMINAL JUSTICE INSTITUTE, IN COOPERATION WITH THE DANE COUNTY JUVENILE OFFICERS' ASSOCIATION, SPONSORED A JUVENILE JUSTICE TRAINING WORKSHOP IN MADISON, SEPTEMBER 20, 1978. EIGHTY-SIX PARTICIPANTS CHOSE TO ATTEND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE MINIWORKSHOPS: VANDALISM IN THE SCHOOLS, STRESS AND STAFF BURNOUT, AND FAMILY DYNAMICS IN WORKING WITH YOUTH PROBLEMS. THE WORKSHOP ON VANDALISM IN THE SCHOOLS WAS DESIGNED TO EXPLORE WAYS OF INVOLVING PROFESSIONALS AND YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTIVANDALISM PROGRAMS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. A PANEL OF YOUTH AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS PARTICIPATED IN THE DESIGN OF AN ACTION PLAN FOR A SCHOOL VANDALISM PROJECT. THE WORKSHOP ON STRESS AND STAFF BURNOUT FOCUSED ON PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL REACTIONS TO STRESS. SOURCES OF STRESS, REACTION PATTERNS, AND POSITIVE COPING PATTERNS WERE EXPLORED. A MODEL OF PROCESSES INVOLVED IN STRESS AND ITS REDUCTION WAS PRESENTED. THE WORKSHOP ON FAMILY DYNAMICS IN WORKING WITH YOUTH PROBLEMS WAS DIRECTED TOWARD THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE FAMILY AND THE ACTING-OUT BEHAVIORS OF YOUTH. A THEORETICAL APPROACH WAS PRESENTED IN CONSIDERING THE PSYCHODYNAMICS OF THE FAMILY GROUP. INFORMATION ON THE ORGANIZATIONAL AFFILIATIONS AND OCCUPATIONS OF PARTICIPANTS IS PROVIDED. PARTICIPANTS RATED THE WORKSHOPS GENERALLY AS SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE. IN THE PROJECT'S QUARTERLY REPORT, THE PROJECT COORDINATOR STATED THAT THE INSTRUCTORS WERE POORLY PREPARED FOR THEIR PRESENTATIONS, DID NOT RESTRICT PRESENTATIONS TO THE PRESCRIBED SUBJECTS, AND WERE FREQUENTLY TOO ACADEMIC TO PROVIDE PRACTICAL GUIDANCE FOR PARTICIPANTS. A SAMPLE OF THE MONITOR QUESTIONNAIRE FOR PARTICIPANTS IS PROVIDED, ALONG WITH DATA ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PARTICIPANTS. (RCB)
