Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOKLET IS TO HELP THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CARE OF CHILDREN TO AVOID THREATENING OR HITTING--TWO BEHAVIORS WHICH OFTEN LEAD TO CHILD ABUSE. THE BOOKLET IS WRITTEN IN AN INFORMAL STYLE, WELL LACED WITH EXAMPLES OF COMMON PARENT-CHILD PROBLEMS. IT INCLUDES SECTIONS ON RESPECT FOR THE CHILD AS A PERSON AND REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS FOR CHILDREN AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT. IT ALSO EMPHASIZES TEACHING THE CHILD TO RESPECT THE PARENT AS A PERSON. THE CHAPTER ON DISCIPLINE SPECIFICALLY COVERS WAYS TO CHANGE UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR ON THE PART OF THE CHILD WITHOUT RESORTING TO HITTING AND EMPHASIZES THAT PHYSICAL DISCIPLINE LOSES ITS POWER WHEN THE CHILD BECOMES AN ADOLESCENT. THE BOOKLET IS BASED ON THE BOOK 'PARENT EFFECTIVENESS TRAINING.' (GLR)
