THIS BOOKLET IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE INFORMATION NEEDED BY BRITISH PLAYLEADERS AND YOUTH WORKERS IN HELPING AND ADVISING JUVENILES INVOLVED IN CRIMINAL AND CARE PROCEEDINGS.
Abstract
THE BOOKLET IS BASED ON A 3-DAY COURSE, KIDS AND THE LAW, ORGANIZED BY THE LONDON ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND ASSOCIATION AS PART OF ITS INSERVICE TRAINING COURSE. IT CAN ALSO BE USED BY PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND OTHER ADULTS WORKING IN THE COMMUNITY. THE BOOKLET EXPLAINS WHAT TO DO IF PRESENT WHEN A CHILD OR YOUNG PERSON IS QUESTIONED BY THE POLICE AND WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN AT THE POLICE STATION AND JUVENILE COURT. DIRECTIONS ARE GIVEN FOR HOW TO FIND A LAWYER OR FOR GETTING INVOLVED IF A LAWYER IS NOT IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE, HOW TO APPLY FOR LEGAL AID AND ARRANGE SURETIES FOR BAIL, AND HOW TO PREPARE A COURT REPORT. OTHER DISCUSSIONS FOCUS ON THE LAW AS IT RELATES TO CARE PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY LOCAL GOVERNMENT USUALLY OCCURRING WHEN A PARENT OR BOTH PARENTS ARE UNABLE TO PROVIDE FOR THE CHILD. TOPICS COVERED WITH REGARD TO CARE PROCEEDINGS INCLUDE SEARCHES, ARREST, RIGHTS, BAIL, TYPES OF COURTS, REMANDS, REPORTS, HEARINGS, SENTENCING, APPEALS, VOLUNTARY CARE, HANDLING OF JUVENILES GUILTY OF A CRIMINAL OFFENSE, CARE ORDERS, ASSUMPTION OF PARENTAL RIGHTS, THE EFFECT OF CARE PROCEEDINGS, WARDSHIP PROCEEDINGS, LAWYERS AND LEGAL AID, AND THE ROLE OF THE PLAYLEADER OR YOUTH WORKER.
