All law enforcement agencies in the State submitted date for this 13th annual report. Individual sections focus on a synopsis of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, an analysis of index offenses, State and county arrest data, a county offense and supplementary data overview, a review of crime in the seventies, municipal demographic profiles, police employment data, and police killed and assaulted. In summary, 425,890 index offenses were reported in 1979, a 12 percent increase over 1978. Violent crimes increased 18 percent, and nonviolent crimes increased 11 percent. Stolen property was valued at 278 million dollars. Robbery was the motive in 17 percent of all murders committed. Larceny-theft and burglary accounted for 79 percent of the State's serious crime. From 1975 to 1979, rural crime increased 35 percent, suburban crime increased 18 percent, and urban crime increased 8 percent. During 1979, 16.5 percent of all index offenses were solved. Persons under 18 years of age were responsible for 37 percent of the solved index offenses. This age group accounted for 40 percent of those arrested for robbery, 60 percent arrested for burglary, 50 percent for larceny, 60 percent for motor vehicle theft, and 60 percent for arson. Five police officers were killed, and 4,316 were assaulted in the line of duty. Data are presented in tabular and graphic form. A glossary is included.
