The universe for the study was persons 16 years old and older who had a valid driver's license. The first 1,000 cases were drawn from a national probability sample of the 48 contiguous States; the final 400 cases were selected from oversampling in 20 States. The cover sheet for the codebook contains information on the questionnaire length, the universe, field dates, interview mode, sample size, data tape characteristics, and file characteristics. The codebook includes the telephone questionnaire and instructions for the interviewer. The questionnaire contains questions on the frequency of alcohol consumption; where respondents most often drink and their mode of transportation to and from the location; drinking and driving experiences; and the respondent's age, sex, educational attainment, and socioeconomic status. The codebook also provides information on the number and code numbers of interviews conducted in each State. A codebook index has descriptive statistics for the drinking and driving data.
