In 1993, 152,489 index offenses were reported, a decrease of 14,100 (8.5 percent) from 1992. The crime rate for the State of Connecticut was determined to be 4,653.3 index offenses for every 100,000 residents. The violent crime rate decreased from 499.1 offenses per 100,000 residents in 1992 to 459.2 in 1993, a decrease of 8 percent. The property crime rate decreased from 4,578.3 offenses per 100,000 residents in 1992 to 4,194.1 in 1993, a decrease of 8.4 percent. Collectively, the violent crimes of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault declined by 1,329 offenses, an 8.1 percent drop from 1992. Property crimes, including burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft, decreased by 12,771 offenses, a decline of 8.5 percent over 1992. Law enforcement agencies cleared 19.9 percent of all index offenses in 1993 and reported $168,018,192 worth of property stolen during the commission of index crimes; they recovered $79,726,266, a 47.5-percent recovery rate. A total of 184,971 persons were arrested for criminal activities in 1993, practically the same total as for 1992. Of total arrests, 21 percent were females and 15.8 percent were persons under 18 years of age. Total arrests for drug abuse violations increased from 17,005 in 1992 to 18,278 in 1993, an increase of 7.5 percent. No police officers were killed in the performance of their duties in 1993.
