In 1993, 7,521 sexual assaults were reported to Wisconsin law enforcement agencies, constituting a 5-percent increase over the 1992 total of 7,159. The most common type of sexual assault was forcible fondling, which accounted for 55 percent of reported cases. Of all sexual assaults, 30 percent were of the most serious types (forcible rape, forcible sodomy, or assault with an object). Ninety-two percent of all sexual assaults were perpetrated by someone known to the victim, and 8 percent were committed by strangers. An offender was arrested in 55 percent of all cases. Eighty-nine percent of all sexual assault offenders apprehended were referred to criminal or juvenile court. Sexual assaults occurred more often in the spring and summer months, and 60 percent of assaults occurred in either the victim's or offender's home. Ninety-eight percent of assaults were committed by single offenders.
