SURVEY METHODOLOGY IS DESCRIBED AND QUESTIONNAIRE DATA ARE PRESENTED FOR AN EXAMINATION OF PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF CRIME ON MASS TRANSPORATION IN CHICAGO, ILL.
Abstract
THE SURVEY IS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION GRANT FROM THE URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION ADMINISTRATION, WITH THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF DEMONSTRATING AND TESTING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CRIME PREVENTION DEVICES IN AN EFFORT TO PROMOTE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. THE SURVEY WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE BASELINE DATA FROM A SAMPLE OF CHICAGO HOUSEHOLDS ON THE EXTENT OF CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY (CTA) RIDERSHIP; TYPE OF VEHICLE USED, IF ANY; IF USED, HOW OFTEN AND AT WHAT TIMES; RESPONDENT'S PERCEPTION OF THE LEVEL OF CRIME ON THE CTA IN RELATION TO OTHER CHARACTERISTICS; USAGE OF THE CTA BY VARIOUS SOCIOECONOMIC GROUPS; AND OTHER RELEVANT DATA. THE TELEPHONE POPULATION IN HOUSEHOLDS OF CHICAGO WAS SPECIFIED AS THE SAMPLE UNIVERSE. 'RANDOM DIGIT DIALING' WAS THE SAMPLING PROCEDURE USED. A TOTAL OF 3,377 CASES WERE ASSIGNED, OF WHICH 2,204 WERE ELIGIBLE CASES WHICH RESULTED IN 1,586 COMPLETED INTERVIEWS. THE SAMPLING PROCEDURES AND TRAINING OF INTERVIEWERS ARE DESCRIBED. THE ORGANIZATION OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE IS ALSO DISCUSSED. THE DATA PRESENTED ARE THE FREQUENCY TABULATIONS FOR EACH ITEM OF THE QUESTIONNAIE. DATA ARE REPORTED ON QUESTIONS APPROPRIATE FOR THESE TYPES OF RESPONDENTS: (1) NON RIDERS, (2) BUS ONLY RIDERS, (3) EL-SUBWAY ONLY RIDERS, AND (4) RIDERS WHO USE BOTH MODES OF TRANSPORTATION. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON EACH QUESTIONNAIRE ITEM, WITHOUT ANALYSIS OR NARRATIVE DISCUSSION OF OVERALL RESULTS. DEMOGRAPHIC AND HOUSEHOLD INFORMATION ON RESPONDENTS IS PROVIDED. THE APPENDIXES PROVIDE A SAMPLE OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE AND THE CONTENTS OF THE CODEBOOK. (RCB)
