TESTIMONY PERTAINING TO A SENATE BILL INTENDED TO STRENGTHEN BOTH POLICY AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN COMBATING TERRORISM IS RECORDED.
Abstract
THE TESTIMONY WAS PRESENTED DURING 7 DAYS OF HEARINGS CONDUCTED BY THE U.S. SENATE COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS. THE BILL UNDER CONSIDERATION IS INTENDED TO ENSURE AN ADEQUATE FRAMEWORK WITHIN WHICH TO HANDLE TERRORIST PROBLEMS AS THEY ARISE, AND TO PROVIDE FOR SWIFT, DIRECT ACTION AGAINST COUNTRIES THAT AID IN TERRORIST ACTIVITIES. WITNESSES PRESENT TESTIMONY REGARDING THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF TERRORISM, THE POTENTIAL THREAT OF TERRORISM, EFFORTS TO COMBAT TERRORISM THROUGH INTERNATIONAL CONVENTIONS AND OTHER MEANS, THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE TERRORIST, THE FEDERAL AND INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE TO THE TERRORIST THREAT, AND RELATED MATTERS. TESTIMONY PRESENTED DURING THE LAST 2 DAYS OF HEARINGS IS DEVOTED TO THE MATTER OF TERRORIST ACTIVITIES INVOLVING THE USE OF NUCLEAR MATERIALS. INCLUDED ARE DISCUSSIONS OF THE ILLICIT MANUFACTURE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS, AND OF GOVERNMENT EFFORTS TO PREVENT TERRORIST ACCESS TO PLUTONIUM AND OTHER NUCLEAR MATERIALS. AMONG THE WITNESSES ARE THE U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE AND THE U.S. SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION, REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MILITARY AND SEVERAL FEDERAL AGENCIES, CONGRESSMEN, SCIENTISTS, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF AIRLINES AND AIRLINE PILOT ASSOCIATIONS. PREPARED STATEMENTS AND OTHER MATERIALS SUBMITTED FOR THE HEARING RECORD ACCOMPANY THE RECORDED TESTIMONY. (LKM)
